What Are Zinc Anodes and Why They Are Used in Cathodic Protection?

Zinc is the proven solution for salt water (seawater), produced brines, and low resistivity soils. Known for its reliability, it provides consistent galvanic protection for ship hulls, tanks, boats and underground infrastructure where stable performance is critical.

Sacrificial zinc anodes operate by creating a galvanic cell with the steel structure, functioning most effectively in conductive electrolytes. They are specifically engineered for low-resistivity environments to corrode sacrificially and prevent rust. At BSS Technologies, we manufacture high-purity zinc alloys in our UAE foundry. Because zinc is a non-sparking metal, it is also the safest option for hazardous areas like cargo tanks, providing predictable protection across marine and industrial applications.

The Galvanic Principle: Why Zinc is Effective

Zinc possesses a natural potential of -1.05V relative to Ag/AgCl. When coupled with steel, this potential difference drives a continuous protective current. This self-regulating mechanism naturally adjusts to salinity or temperature changes, ensuring constant protection without external power or monitoring.

Technical Specifications

BSS Tech zinc anodes are engineered for reliable performance in demanding environments. They are manufactured under strict quality control to ensure consistent chemical composition and electrochemical output.

Applicable Environments:

Ideal for seawater, produced brines, and low-resistivity soils (<1000 Ω-cm). For soils, we supply pre-packaged anodes with gypsum/bentonite backfill.

High-Temperature Zinc Anodes:

Specialized alloy formulations available for ambient temperatures exceeding 50°C.

Open-Circuit Potential:

-1.05 V (relative to Ag/AgCl).

Current Capacity:

780 Ah/kg.

Galvanic Efficiency:

Typically, 90–95%.
